Evidence log
    1974

The year NASA first set out technology readiness levels.

    9

Technology readiness levels, from principles to proven operation.

Readiness scales side by side, each with its own evidence.

    § 02 — Scales

Ready means more than “it works”

A technology that works still has to be made, integrated, sold and used safely. Each scale gets its own colour, criteria and evidence, so a gate review sees the whole picture at once.

    § 03 — Who it's for

For the people who sign off the launch

Readiness calls are made by engineers, judged by reviewers and paid for by funders. They should all be looking at the same evidence.

Consistent TRL and MRL reviews across a product portfolio, with readiness that stays in step with PLM and Jira.

Every level links to the report that proves it, exported in the format your funding programme asks for.

What is a technology readiness level (TRL)?

A TRL is a 1 to 9 measure of how mature a technology is. TRL 1 means basic principles have been observed; TRL 9 means the actual system is proven in its operational environment. NASA developed the scale and it is now used by the EU, the US Department of Defense and Department of Energy, and many funding bodies.

How is MRL different from TRL?

TRL measures whether the technology works. Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL), on a 1 to 10 scale, measures whether you can produce it repeatably at the required rate, cost and quality. A product can be at TRL 7 and still be at MRL 4.

Which readiness scales does LaunchRL support?

Technology (TRL), manufacturing (MRL), integration (IRL), commercial and adoption readiness, and human readiness (HRL), with framework wording that can follow your funder, sector or internal process.

    Is there a free version?

Yes. The TRL calculator on this site is free and needs no sign-up. Early access to the full platform opens to a small group first.

Who owns the evidence I upload?

You do. Evidence stays in your workspace and is only shared when you export or invite someone.

    § 05 — Early access · T-minus

    Ready for launch?

We're opening LaunchRL to a small group of R&D teams, grant advisers and funders first.
